Soil Vasu's Guide to Composting to Rebuild Soil Health
About the Solution
Organic manure is essential for maintaining good soil health. After a cropping season, it’s good practice to apply manure to the soil. For farmers using organic methods of farming, it’s recommended that they make farm yard manure (FYM) using waste from their cattle. However, not all farmers have access to cattle and especially for small and marginal farmers, FYM is not technically and economically feasible.
Composting helps the farmer to recycle wet-waste near their farms/houses to build high quality manure for their soil, creates stable soil aggregation, improves soil moisture and stops soil erosion. It improves aeration in the soil and adds micro-biota, minerals and humus. This 9-step model by Soil Vasu has seen success and made positive impact in Bellary, Chitradurga, Mysuru, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Kolar, and various other parts of the country.
Soil Vasu is an initiative focused on promoting sustainable soil management and regenerative farming practices. By developing farmer-friendly training materials and playbooks, Soil Vasu equips trainers, community resource persons (CRPs), and farmer groups with practical knowledge to improve soil health and agricultural resilience.
The organization emphasizes low-cost, locally adaptable solutions such as composting, natural fertilizers, and organic inputs, ensuring that small and marginal farmers can adopt them without heavy investments. Its work supports a transition away from chemical dependence toward ecological farming systems that build long-term fertility, improve crop productivity, and enhance climate resilience in rural communities.
